Each September, libraries across the country celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week. This year, join us from September 22-28 to learn about censorship and the values of free and open access to information.

The American Library Association's list of the top 10 most challenged books of 2023 included some grim statistics - namely that they had "documented 4,240 unique book titles targeted for censorship in 2023—a 65% surge over 2022 numbers—as well as 1,247 demands to censor library books, materials, and resources." Of the titles targeted for censorship, 47% included LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC content. Most book bans and challenges occur in school and public libraries, but a handful of academic libraries have also received complaints.

Which types books are being challenged? Here are just a few titles from the list of Top 100 Frequently Challenged Books (2010-2019) that you can check out now from the Cerro Coso library.
