2000

  • In December of 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to end the vote recount in Florida in the Bush v Gore case, giving the presidency to George W. Bush after a prolonged legal battle following the election. 
  • The first crew to live on the International Space Station (ISS) arrives in space in November. The mission was called Expedition 1 and totaled 136 days. 
  • Vladimir Putin was elected as the Russian President. 
  • Sony launched the PlayStation 2

2001

  • Two hijacked jetliners ram the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in the worst terrorist attack against the U.S.; a third hijacked plane flies into the Pentagon, and a fourth crashes in rural Pennsylvania. More than 3,000 people died in the attacks.
  • George W. Bush was inaugurated as the 43rd president. 
  • Wikipedia is launched
  • Enron files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

2002

  • In his first State of the Union address, President Bush labeled Iran, Iraq, and North Korea an “axis of evil” and declared that the U.S. would wage war against states that developed weapons of mass destruction.
  • President Bush signed legislation creating a new cabinet department of Homeland Security.

  • Space shuttle Columbia explodes upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts on board.
  • The Human Genome Project is completed. 
  • Tesla is founded
  • MySpace is launched

2004

  • Facebook is launched
  • Train bombings in Madrid killed nearly 200 people.
  • Indian Ocean earthquake leaves a quarter of a million dead.

2005

  • YouTube has launched. 
  • Suicide bombers in London killed 56 people and injured 700 more. 
  • Hurricane Katrina floods New Orleans
  • Angela Merkel became first female Chancellor of Germany

2006

  • Twitter is launched
  • Pluto is demoted to a "dwarf planet" status
  • North Korea conducts its first nuclear test
  • The West African Black Rhino is declared extinct.

2007

  • Apple debuts the iPhone
  • Amazon releases the Kindle
  • Google Street View has been launched. 

2008

  • Barack Obama wins presidency
  • Fidel Castro steps down as Cuban President

2009

  • Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.
  • Water is discovered on the Moon. 
  • Sonia Sotomayor becomes first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice
