An Odyssey course guide for Cliff Davis' English 101 Course

Welcome to the English 101 Research Guide for Cliff Davis

This Guide includes books, eBooks, articles, and more on The Odyssey. Use the tabs at the top of the page to navigate to specific types of sources for specific topics.

Research Paper Tips

For your research paper, Professor Davis has provided the following:

On the basis of a deeper and more informed understanding of the Odyssey through research, pursue an independent inquiry into a subject of your personal interest.

Here are a few possibilities:

  1. Research to what extent Homer’s poem reflects real-life society, class distinctions, and gender roles in ancient Greece.
  2. Research what Homer’s poem tells us about ancient Greek religious practices.
  3. Research what role war plays in Homer’s the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Your argument must be supported by a coherent combination of primary (the Odyssey) and secondary (articles about the Odyssey) sources.

You must use at least four secondary sources located in the LRC databases. You are also required to use some combination of Bernard Knox’s introduction to Fagles’s translation and my posts and lectures in class. No other sources, whether in print or online, are acceptable.
