What Do Library Student Workers Do?

Have you ever wanted to work at a library? Now's your chance! The Cerro Coso Library is hiring a student worker for 10 hours a week at the IWV campus in Ridgecrest. For more information on how to apply, contact Jennifer Marshall by phone (760-384-6276), email, or in-person at the Career Center in WW 145 (near the fountain in the outdoor courtyard). It's a great way to gain job experience in a quiet atmosphere working with library staff who are, objectively speaking, fantastic people.

So what do library student workers do?

On a daily basis, student workers do a number of things at the library, from shelving books to assisting other students with using computers and checking out materials. Student workers may also work on special projects, such as inventorying the collection, entering data, checking library resources for outdated links, or assisting with student outreach.

When we interview a student worker, we like to find out their strengths and interests and see how the the library can help them do what they enjoy. Are you tech-savvy? We'd love to have you help us build a digital archive or user-test our online resources and recommend improvements. Are you a social media person? We'd love to have you create a bite-sized YouTube video, design an attention-grabbing Instagram post, or write for this blog. Do you like hands-on creativity? Help us create eye-catching monthly book displays or plan our next makerspace craft. Do you prefer interacting with people? We've got a handful of fliers and a Bookie mascot costume with your name on it!

You don't need to be a book nerd to work at the library (although it comes in handy!) but enthusiasm and a hunger for learning will help you go far. And if you discover you really enjoy it, you just may find yourself returning in a few years as a member of our permanent staff. Just ask Davis!
