Do you like free stuff? We do!
Open Education Week is celebrated all around the world this week by libraries and other organizations which not only believe that education should be accessible to everyone, but are actively breaking down economic barriers to create and promote quality textbooks and other learning resources that are completely (and legally!) free of cost.
At Cerro Coso, over 60 instructors have switched from pricey textbooks to zero cost resources, which include OER textbooks, open source articles and websites, and library materials. Using OERs instead of traditional textbooks can add up to thousands of dollars in student savings over the course of earning a degree. Since 2016, our OER program has saved Cerro Coso students a total of nearly 1 million dollars! That's a lot of ramen.
Instructors who haven't yet made the switch to OERs are encouraged to contact our OER liason librarian, Sharlene Paxton, for more information.
