April is National Poetry Month! To celebrate, we'd like to share a poetry submission we received from an incarcerated student who is a part of the ISEP program at Cerro Coso. The poem has been reproduced exactly as written.

Opportunity for a Better Hope

by Walter Sanchez

Swiftly started as a light bulb moment,
As I watched T.V.
I saw how immigrants are taking the journey from Latin American countries into this land,
Of opportunity,
How it hurt to see the news speak of rejection,
Rejection, rejection that recoils.
Towards humans who only seek a second chance,
Though I sit in a physical prison,
I can empathize towards them,
Once embarked that same journey to this land of opportunity,
The land of the GREAT!
Now I speak to those whom are near,
Whom are my family,
Who want to contribute to this land of the free,
Now I stand on a Friday,
At the round table,
Those small tables that make you visualize,
As if you’re in some place far away in the middle east or of the likeness of Asia,
In the presence of my father,
With my mother and sisters,
Speaking about scholarships for the youngest of my sisters,
Constructing to obtain a golden ticket,
I found myself speaking,
With GOD nothing is impossible,
I know because I am free,
Free to be constructive,
Living in a place where many are imprisoned,
Physically and internally,
Yet waiting to be set free.
Therefore, sister as your brother thought I find myself in this position,
I will knock doors,
Cant remove your expression off my face my mind,
You chuckled as if you were saying I love the sound of what you speak,
Though don’t know what else to say.
Are time is up,
Now were speaking the best desires we have towards each other,
Those amazing blessings,
I am impelled as I arrive to my living quarters,
To seek,knock,and ask behind doors,
For my sister, I am not to hold back,
This is about the future of our hope generation,
In this land of opportunity
In the land of the free.
